Glitz and Glamour

I think it’s safe to say that most people don’t get enough sleep [waves hands frantically in the air]- and if they do, it’s not quality sleep. And yet, we know that poor sleep quality can unleash a host of other health issues. So how do we rectify this situation? Getting in touch with your doctor is a good place to start! So is being consistent with your sleep habits. Habits such as turning off technology an hour or more before bed, reducing light in your bedroom, using blue light blocking glasses, and sleeping in a cool space. However, this is not the doctor’s office and it’s up to you to turn around those bad habits!

Where Punctuate Your Style can help is to create a space that makes you want to rest- a place that creates a sense of calm and respite from all of the tasks that we have to accomplish as we practice that silly thing we all dreamed of being when we were younger– an adult.

I was recently at Design Edge in Washington DC to look at new introductions in furniture, wallcoverings, lighting, and textiles. It was design heaven everywhere! However, when I came to the end of one row, it was as if there was a spotlight shining down. And there it was: the Worthen Chamberlayne bed. It is this month’s “Just One Thing” and would be the centerpiece of my own calming space.

Worthen has been around since 1975, creating high quality brass and iron furniture with their in-house artisans. You can click here to read more about them and their process.

The Chamberlayne is a Baroque-style brass bed that is fully customizable and- while it’s always going to stand front and center because it is so beautiful- can make a neutral statement like it does in this room or have a painted finish that brings it completely front and center! I loved the one that they had at  the show (and am using it here) to  demonstrate that neutrals can in fact  have their  own personality! For me the bed, with its simplicity and stature, is the absolute centerpiece of the room. The bedding, wallcovering, lighting, and rug are all chosen to

complement its presence, with the metallic theme highlighted throughout.

The Phillip Jeffries Flourish is a three section mural on wood veneer that adds texture and dimension with its golden floral scape. It’s large-scale is perfect as an accent wall behind the bed- or if you love it, for the entire bedroom! Its subtle elegance brings the Baroque feeling of the bed frame to the rest of the space. While Phillip Jeffries offers five colorways, I chose two that stood out to me- one having more of a pop than the other- giving you the ability to visualize which you would prefer.

The glitz and glamour theme continues with the sconce lighting and the rug. Urban Electric and Stark Carpet are both known for  high quality and luxurious products that make a statement in any room . The Parker Sconce and Aila Rug both elevate the space with the understated but profound details. The Parker Sconce brings drama at 28” high and 18” wide. Though a work of art on its own, on either side of the Chamberlayne bed, it helps to ground a large wall and draw the focus to the gorgeous mural and the canopy bed.

Rather than take the focus away  from the bed, wallcovering, and lighting, I wanted something that would play nicely without competing for attention. Stark’s Aila rug, with its soft pastel colors and sheen does this perfectly. The colors in the rug draw you in but the muted pattern does not keep your eye from moving on to the other beautiful aspects in the room.

And finally, there is the Abner Henry Woodlands Side table. I envision a comfortable chair in one corner of the room- perfect for reading before bed- with this dainty table next to it. Visually light, its gold metal work gives it a personality of its own but one that pairs well with both the metallic accents throughout the room and the PJ Flourish wallcovering!

I don’t know about you but a room like this may keep me from adulting ever again!
